Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure of Maldives has announced plans to seek financial assistance for the development of domestic airports worth USD 133 million (MVR 2 billion) under the ‘cross-subsidy’ model in six islands of the Maldives.
According to the bid announced by the Ministry, the number of investments proposed for the development of the airport will be reduced from the acquisition cost of islands/land or lagoons to be leased for tourism purposes.
The planning announcement includes the estimated cost per airport.
With the development of these domestic airports, it will increase accessibility to the outer atolls of Maldives and is expected to boost tourism. With several resorts facing difficulties in accessibility, the addition of new domestic airports will enable the resorts to prosper in atolls far from Male’ with the necessary infrastructure and support services.
