The Maldives is taking significant steps to expand its tourism sector, with plans to attract four million visitors each year and reach $7 billion in revenue. Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal outlined these targets, highlighting the government’s focus on growth in the industry.
As noted by Minister Faisal, The government is planning to increase tourism revenue and is actively working toward that goal. “We are determined to increase our income from tourism. If our plans are successful, we expect to see the number of annual tourists rise by 3.5 million to four million over the next five years”, Minister stated.
Currently, the Maldives is projected to welcome two million tourists this year, a significant rise from the 1.8 million who visited in 2023. So far, the country has welcomed 1.4 million tourists in 2024, reflecting a 9.6% increase compared to the same period last year.
Minister Faisal highlighted the critical role of tourism in the Maldivian economy, noting that the sector currently contributes approximately $4.5 billion annually. “We believe that with strategic planning and execution, we can elevate this figure to $7 billion by the end of our term” he added.
As the Maldives looks to enhance its tourism sector, there is a positive outlook on growth potential and its benefits for the national economy.
