China Rises to Number One in Tourist Arrivals to the Maldives Ahead of Chinese New Year 2025

The Maldives’ tourism sector has seen a substantial boost with China emerging as the top source of tourist arrivals, surpassing Russia and Italy. The latest data from the Ministry of Tourism underscores China’s growing influence in the global tourism market and its vital role in the Maldives’ economy.

As of 28 January 2025, a total of 193,175 visitors had arrived in the Maldives, with China contributing 29,397—15.2% of the total market share. This places the country at the forefront of arrivals, followed by Russia (20,291, or 10.5%) and Italy (18,779, or 9.7%). China’s share is particularly notable as the country capitalises on its peak travel period during the Chinese New Year.

While Russia led the market share at the start of the festive season, China has surged ahead, driven by the anticipation of the Chinese New Year. This holiday, one of the most prominent in China, typically sees a spike in outbound travel, and the Maldives has become a sought-after destination for Chinese travellers. Stakeholders in the Maldives’ tourism industry have proactively targeted this demand with initiatives including partnerships with Chinese travel agencies and promotional campaigns.

China’s dominance in the Maldives’ tourism market has been firmly established over recent years. In 2024, Chinese nationals accounted for 12.9% of the total 2,046,615 arrivals, with 263,340 visitors from China. This consistent rise highlights the country’s growing role as a key source market, solidifying its status as a preferred destination for Chinese holidaymakers.

Air connectivity between the two countries has improved significantly, further facilitating the flow of Chinese visitors. On 22 January 2025, Maldivian Airlines launched Airbus A330 flights to Beijing, Chengdu, and Shanghai, making travel to the Maldives even more accessible. Additionally, Chongqing Airlines resumed services to Malé on 8 January 2025, restoring a vital route between the Maldives and Chongqing, the largest commercial hub in Southwest China. This expanded network will further bolster China’s position as the leading source market for the Maldives’ tourism industry.
