Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon Welcomes the New Year with Turtle Hatchlings

The first morning of the New Year brought a rare and meaningful event to Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon. On the island’s shores, three tiny turtles emerged from their shells and made their way to the Indian Ocean, guided by instinct. Guests and staff gathered to witness this moment, marking the start of the year with a unique connection to nature.

The eggs, laid weeks earlier, were cared for by the resort’s marine biology team, led by Tharushi Pitigala. Under their watchful eyes, the eggs were protected to ensure the safe arrival of the hatchlings. Guests followed the progress closely, with regular updates from the team. Reflecting on the event, Tharushi said, “Seeing them emerge and instinctively head towards the sea is nothing short of miraculous. Each turtle plays a vital role in sustaining the ocean’s delicate ecosystems, from maintaining healthy seagrass beds to supporting coral reef biodiversity.”

In the following days, more hatchlings appeared, drawing guests back to witness their journey into the ocean. Each emergence added to the sense of connection between the island and the marine life it nurtures.

Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon has long supported marine conservation through coral propagation and reef monitoring. These efforts have created a space where marine life can flourish, including the green and hawksbill turtles that call the island home.

Events like these emphasise the need to protect marine ecosystems. At Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon, the hatching of these turtles is a reminder of the ongoing responsibility to preserve the oceans and the life they sustain.
