When the COVID-19 virus’ new variant, Omicron, began spreading in India, the Indian government updated its COVID-19 guidelines such that arrivals are required to complete a 7-day quarantine. The new policy came into effect on 11th January, and the Maldives was among the list of countries on which the restrictions were applicable.

The revised guidelines state that international arrivals are no longer required go through the mandatory quarantine, and do not have to take a negative PCR test.

However, two percent of the arrivals will be subject to random sample testing for COVID-19, after which they will be allowed to leave the airport to their house or hotel.

Instead of the 7-day quarantine, Indian authorities recommend a 14-day self monitoring after arrival. The self-declaration form and the proof of vaccination or a PCR test results are to be uploaded to the Air Suvidha portal 72 hours before traveling.

Many Maldivians frequently travel to India for medicine, tourism, education, and business.
