Bandos Maldives Geared Up for International Housekeeping Week 2024
The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Managing Director, Ibrahim Shareef, has emphasised the significant role that relationships and partnerships forged during this year’s Air Service World Congress (ASWC) 2024 will play in shaping a brighter future for the Maldivian aviation industry. Shareef’s remarks came during the inaugural ceremony of the 7th Air Services World Congress at the Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort and Spa on Tuesday evening.
In his speech, Shareef highlighted the Congress as a vital platform for airlines, airports, and tourism industry authorities to collaborate and advance the development of global air services. He noted that the event will open new avenues for commerce and growth in the Maldivian aviation sector.
“Velana International Airport (VIA), our premier aviation hub, is not just a gateway to the Maldives but a symbol of progress and a testament to our commitment to excellence in aviation and hospitality,” said Shareef. He also pointed out that extensive modernisation and expansion projects have been undertaken at VIA to enhance the infrastructure and capacity of Maldivian airports.
“These developments are crucial as they enable us to welcome a growing number of visitors from around the globe,” Shareef stated, adding that MACL’s vision is to position VIA as a premier hub in the Indian Ocean region.
Shareef further praised President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and his government’s strategic approach to expanding VIA as a hub for economic development. He outlined MACL’s vision to develop the airport with a variety of facilities that align with the country’s luxurious hospitality industry.
“From the construction of new terminals to incorporating new technologies, every step has been meticulously crafted to cater to the evolving needs of our passengers and airlines,” he explained.
Highlighting the vital nature of the tourism industry, which contributes 28 per cent to the Maldives’ GDP, Shareef stressed that advancements at VIA are pivotal in supporting this sector. “By increasing our capacity and connectivity, we are able to attract more tourists, foster economic growth, and create sustainable development for our communities,” he said.
Shareef also underscored the emphasis on sustainability in VIA’s development projects, incorporating eco-friendly practices, renewable energy sources, and innovative solutions to minimise the carbon footprint.
He concluded by inviting the ASWC participants to explore possibilities for building mutually beneficial and lasting relationships, thanking President Muizzu and his administration for their unwavering commitment to the aviation industry. He also expressed gratitude to the stakeholders, partners, and the dedicated team at VIA for their continued support and hard work.
The Air Service World Congress 2024 has attracted over 150 delegates from 27 airlines, 17 airports, and other aviation industry stakeholders. This marks the first route development congress to be held in the Maldives.
The ASWC activities will proceed across three different resort properties: the welcoming event was held at the Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa, with networking and special events at SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection by Hilton in CROSSROADS Maldives, and the main event at Kurumba Maldives.
