Laamu Atoll To See Major Tourism Expansion with Four New Resorts

Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal, a native of Fonadhoo, has pledged to spearhead the development of Laamu Atoll, with ambitious plans including establishing four resorts and transforming Gan-Fonadhoo into a city.

The promise was made during a celebratory event honouring his father, Abdul Raheem Abdullah, who secured a seat in the 20th Parliamentary elections held on Tuesday.

Faisal outlined the government’s vision to develop four resorts under the ‘One Island’ concept. He disclosed that the first lease agreement would be with a Dubai-based company, with the resort slated for construction within the lagoon of L. Maafaru island.

Confident in the project’s timeline, Faisal estimated a completion window of 2-3 years, expressing optimism in the successful implementation of the Baresdhoo project under the current administration.

Addressing infrastructure enhancements, Faisal revealed plans to upgrade Kahdhoo Airport into an international hub, complete with jet parking facilities in the subsequent phase. Emphasising a tourism-centric approach, he reiterated the atoll’s alignment with the ‘One Island’ concept.
