Ibrahim Shiuree, the CEO and Managing Director of Maldives Marketing & Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/Visit Maldives), has expressed the Maldives’ ambition to restore India as one of its top three tourism markets. This initiative comes following a previous diplomatic dispute that reduced Indian tourist arrivals.
In an interview with The Indian Express, Shiuree highlighted the Maldives’ efforts to re-engage with the Indian market, where they have launched the “Welcome India” initiative. This initiative includes a series of roadshows in major Indian cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, led by Maldives Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal during his six-day visit to India.
India ranks sixth in the list of top 10 markets for the Maldives, with China holding the top spot. However, as of late July 2024, 71,381 Indian travellers have visited the Maldives, constituting 6.1% of the total tourist market share. The goal is to increase this figure and reinstate India among the top three markets.
To achieve this, the Maldives employs a data-driven approach to implement various promotional strategies, focusing on accommodations, services, and unique selling points. Furthermore, the country aims to position itself as a year-round destination through strategic campaigns and attractive offers, emphasizing its affordability and appeal as a short-haul destination for Indian travellers.
Regarding connectivity, five airlines currently operate multiple flights weekly between India and the Maldives. The Maldives is actively exploring opportunities to increase flight connectivity by introducing additional direct flights from more Indian cities to various regions of the Maldives.
Shiuree also highlighted the reciprocal relationship between the Maldives and India regarding tourism, with many Maldivians visiting Indian cities for medical tourism, leisure, and shopping.
He said the aim is not only to attract Indian tourists to the Maldives but also to strengthen ties and promote reciprocal tourism between the two countries. With concerted efforts and strategic initiatives, the Maldives seeks to re-establish India as one of its top tourism markets, fostering a mutually beneficial relationship in the travel and tourism sector.
