In July 2024, the Maldives experienced a 15.1% increase in tourist arrivals compared to last year, with 150,404 visitors. This growth is significant, especially compared to the more modest gains earlier in the year. The year-to-date data shows a 10% increase in tourist arrivals for the first seven months of 2024, totalling 1,165,933 visitors. Despite global challenges, this indicates the Maldives’ resilience and appeal as a top travel destination.
There have been increases in tourist numbers almost every month in 2024, with standout months including January and March with 11.5% and 11.9% rises, and February with the highest growth rate of 22.2%. Notably, May 2024 experienced a slight decline of 0.9% compared to May 2023, showing fluctuations in the otherwise upward trend.
China, Russia, and the United Kingdom were the primary sources of tourists in July 2024, with China leading at 154,665 arrivals, followed by Russia with 124,064 arrivals, and the UK with 103,559 arrivals.
As of July 2024, the Maldives had 1,215 operational tourist facilities, including 182 resorts, 14 hotels, 867 guesthouses, and 152 safari vessels, providing a total bed capacity 62,481.
