The highly anticipated opening of the new international terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) has been rescheduled for mid-2025, following recommendations from the Airline Operators Committee (AOC) to ensure a flawless experience for all passengers.
Speaking at a parliamentary committee meeting, Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed shared that while 82% of the terminal is already complete and part of the terminal could be operational this year, the decision was made to delay the full opening. This approach will ensure that the final stages of the project are finished to the highest standards, preventing any disruptions due to potential technical issues.
“The terminal is progressing well and is on track to be ready as planned,” Shareef said. “However, the AOC advised that a slight delay will allow us to address all remaining technical details to ensure a smooth and successful launch.”
The AOC, a key advisory body representing airlines operating in the Maldives and following guidance from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), plays an essential role in ensuring the best possible airport operations. With their guidance, MACL is confident that the delay will lead to an even better, more seamless travel experience for visitors and locals alike.
While the government had initially planned to open part of the terminal this year, the revised timeline will ensure the new terminal is fully ready for its grand debut during the mid-2025 season, further enhancing the Maldives’ reputation as a world-class destination.
