At Amilla Maldives, Mohamed Nafiu has recently been promoted to Director of Human Resources, marking a significant step in his career. With a background in banking and a passion for people management, Nafiu brings a broad range of experience to his new role.
Over the years, he has developed a strong focus on team leadership and people development, supported by the inclusive and supportive culture at Amilla Maldives. In this interview, we explore Nafiu’s career path, his approach to creating a positive work environment, and his vision for the HR department at the resort.
My career started in the banking industry, where I worked in administrative roles and eventually became a branch manager. During this time, I realised how critical people management is to the success of any organisation. This realisation led me to pursue a career in Human Resources, where I could focus on connecting with people and supporting their growth. It was a big change, but one that has been incredibly rewarding.
I’ve always believed in the power of creating an environment where people feel valued, supported, and empowered to grow. Human Resources allows me to do just that—helping individuals overcome challenges, solve problems, and ultimately succeed. For me, HR is more than just managing administrative processes; it’s about building a strong, positive workplace culture where everyone can thrive. I feel incredibly fortunate to work in a role where I can contribute to the company’s success and its people’s growth.
I joined Amilla in 2019 as an HR Officer, and I’ve been grateful for every opportunity since. The resort has a culture that genuinely values career development, recognition, and the well-being of its team. From HR Officer to HR Supervisor, HR Executive, Assistant HR Manager, and then HR Manager, each step in my journey has been supported by the incredible leaders around me. I owe so much to my previous and current leaders, who have shaped me into who I am today. I’m also deeply thankful to my team members and my HR team. Without their hard work, dedication, and support, I wouldn’t have been able to achieve what I have now.
Our brand pillars are well-being, inclusivity, and sustainability, and these will continue to guide our initiatives. While we have many plans, I want to emphasise prioritising diversity in our workforce, with sensitivity to our workforce parity ratio. Supporting local employment and development, especially in nearby atolls, is our key focus. I also fully support our current management’s goal of making Amilla an accessible employer, which includes the possibility of hiring people with disabilities. While we’ve been doing well on well-being and sustainability, these are areas that I believe are worth sharing and expanding on, as they reflect our commitment to a more inclusive and sustainable future.
First and foremost, value your networks and the people you work with. Relationships are key in HR, especially in hospitality, where the success of an organisation depends on its people. Be genuine in your interactions and always maintain your integrity—it will carry you through every challenge.
It’s also essential to always give your best in everything you do. Mistakes will happen, but learning from them is what counts. Don’t dwell on what you lack; instead, focus on your strengths, which will help you overcome weaknesses. By staying true to yourself and striving for excellence, you’ll continue to grow both personally and professionally.
Nafiu’s journey from banking to Human Resources has been one of growth, learning, and gratitude. At Amilla Maldives, he has found a platform for his career development and a supportive environment where team members are encouraged to flourish. As the new Director of Human Resources, Nafiu’s leadership will continue to focus on creating a workplace where everyone feels valued, supported, and empowered to succeed.
